Once a property has been insulated, a large proportion of remaining heat is lost through draughts and gaps in the building fabric. If this is addressed at the same time as the insulation, then costs for heating your home are significantly reduced. To achieve this, an airtightness membrane is used. Airtight membranes can be vapour open, so although they prevent excess draughts and air leakage, moisture can still move through them.
The airtight liquid vapour control membranes you see below will improve the protection of building components, boosting the impermeability of the building envelope. Enhanced enclosure performance increases the longevity of the building, and improves energy consumption and internal air quality.
Easy to apply with either spray or brush, our products adhere to any substrate. For those larger gaps, use the brush-applied facade membrane with reinforced fibres. Importantly, our air-tightness membranes are VOC-free (volatile organic compound) and Passivhaus certified.

Will Airtight Paint Give me Airtightness on the First Coat?
This will hugely depend on the condition of the wall and the prep work that has been done. To ensure the best results we always recommend preparing the wall by filling any cracks and holes in the mortar and applying a priming coat. We would also suggest using two coats to provide an even finish.
Why Should I Use Airtight Paint on Internal Walls When I Have Other Insulation Between The Blockwork and the Outside?
Even with cladding or other insulation on your internal walls, warm air can escape through even the tiniest gaps in the blocks, which results in an inefficient heating system and higher energy bills. A coat of airtight paint can help seal any gaps and stop heat from escaping through your walls.
Can I Use Airtight Paint on All Types of Surfaces?
Yes, our range of airtight products can be applied on various surfaces including concrete, brick, steel, wood and more.
Can I apply airtight paint on previously painted walls?
Yes, however, the surface needs to be prepared by removing any flaking paint, grease or dust to prevent them from getting trapped in the paint. If you want to ensure the best results, we recommend using a priming product like out Lime Prime or Render Prime.
What Are Benefits of Installing an Air Tightness Membrane?
Air leakage can make up for as much as 50% of heat loss in a modern home and increase not only your heating bill, but also your CO2 emissions.
By preventing air from escaping the building you can significantly reduce the energy consumed for heating. This can help you save money on your electricity and gas bills, and also make your home more environmentally-friendly.
Lack of airtightness in a building can also significantly increase the risk of condensation, mould and structural damage. Installing an air tightness membrane, such as our Passive Purple, can protect your building and create a healthier living environment.
Is Air Tightness Used in Construction?
In modern day construction, air tightness is a necessity to ensure there are no unwanted gaps in your building that allow air to escape.
Air leakage can be a massive problem in a building as it can reduce energy efficiency and create an overall draughty and unhealthy environment.
Here at Intelligent Membranes we design products with a heavy focus on sustainability to meet the needs of modern construction practices. If you want to know which of our products will be best suited for your project, our team is always happy to help.
Does Airtightness Restrict the Flow of Moisture?
Yes. Moisture exists inside every home and is generated through various activities such as cooking, washing, even breathing. If the warm moisture passes into the structure of the building and cools down, it results in internal condensation.
In the long run, this can lead to a number of issues including structural degradation, mould and heat loss. Our air tightness membranes can prevent moisture from entering the building’s framework, making your home breathable.
Why Does Air Tightness Matter?
Making sure the envelope of a building is airtight is crucial for several reasons. An airtight building is more energy efficient as heat loss is minimised. It provides a guard against condensation which in turn keeps away mould and damp and makes for a healthier living environment.
How Can I Ensure Air Tightness?
To make a building airtight, it is important to seal any small cracks and holes in your building envelope. Ideally, you are looking for a product which helps easily fill any area of potential air leakage and is simple to apply – just like our range of airtight paints.
Why Should I Use Airtight Paint Over Other Products?
Our Airtight Paint is easy to apply with either brush or spray. It’s a long lasting, cheaper solution and is also environmentally friendly. It’s versatile and can be applied to a number of different surfaces.
