FRED is certified Class A2-s1,d0.
FRED has been fire tested by Warringtonfire on 11mm OSB. We rate it at 15 minutes of fire protection on 11mm OSB, a deliberate safety margin below the tested result.
FRED is used inside. In case of external application, it should be coated with a fire retarding flexible coating such as Passive Purple External or local building regulations need to be followed.
Fred has been tested as part of a system by UKTC on a non-load-bearing partition wall filled with 140mm closed-cell polyurethane foam, assembly when classified in accordance BS EN 13501-2:2023 as E20, EL20, EW20
This testing means Fred, as part of the system, will have,
- E20 - Integrity for 20 minutes - The barrier stops the physical passage of flames, smoke, and hot toxic gases.
- EW20 - Integrity & Radiation Control for 20 minutes - Like E20 it blocks flames and smoke. However, it adds a layer of safety by restricting radiant heat transmission.
- EL20 - Integrity & Full Insulation - This is the highest class of fire protection. It blocks flames and smoke, while completely insulating against heat transfer.
If Fred is to be spray applied, it must be applied with an intumescent spray machine. Intelligent Membranes would recommend a TriTech T5 spray machine or a machine with similar specifications.

Spray foam thermal barrier: the Class B build-up
Exposed spray foam is combustible; on its own it typically classifies as Euroclass E, so building control and insurers normally require a fire-rated thermal barrier over it. FRED is Intelligent Membranes' intumescent thermal barrier for the job, tested in the UK and EU to EN 13501-1. Applied as a build-up of spray foam → Supergrip FR fire-rated primer → FRED, it brings exposed foam up to a Class B reaction to fire, while FRED itself is certified Class A2-s1,d0. Reaction to fire: FRED alone Class A2-s1,d0. Over spray-foam insulation, the build-up of foam, Supergrip FR primer and FRED achieves Class B. Fire resistance: 15 minutes on 11 mm OSB (Warringtonfire test). Consumption: 0.6–2 kg/m² in one or two coats, depending on the protection required. Use: Internal. Where used externally, overcoat with a flexible fire-retarding coating such as Passive Purple External. Emissions: EMICODE EC1.
