Passive Purple is the Intelligent Membrane

There are many forms of airtight membranes available on the market but what makes products from Intelligent Membranes different? Well it is in fact in the name. Products sold by the IM brand are Intelligent, hence OUR term Intelligent Membrane.
Which products in our collections ARE OUR Intelligent Membrane?
The products in our collections that can be considered to be OUR intelligent membrane are Passive Purple Internal and Passive Purple External
Passive Purple Internal
Passive Purple Internal is a Intelligent membrane paint product that is used to provide vapour control on the inside of the building. It is used on the wall, ceiling and connecting joints to provide airtightness. The benefit of applying Passive Purple Internal is to improve efficiency ratings, reducing air leakage. The reason it can be considered an intelligent membrane is our special unique formulation because it reacts to the changes in temperature and humidity, providing protection against dampness and mould. Passive Purple Internal is applied using an airless sprayer or roll applied . A brush edition is also required to cover small areas such as connecting joints.
Passive Purple External
Passive Purple External has the same benefits as Passive Purple Internal but is vapour open so it provides extra waterproofing in the same way a rain coat does. The choice on whether you go forward with Internal or External depends on the design of the building and will need to be judged based on condensation levels which is why the WUFI assessment is useful. External is useful for buildings where access to the painting area is unavailable because of plasterboard etc. It can reduce project time because you do not need to remove plasterboard or plywood walls.
What is the difference between Passive Purple Internal and Passive Purple External?
Internal airtightness involves sealing gaps within a building’s envelope from conditioned to unconditioned spaces, ensuring comfortable indoor conditions and energy efficiency, while external airtightness focuses on sealing the outer shell of the building to prevent uncontrolled airflow from the outside, crucial for maintaining structural integrity, minimising moisture ingress, and reducing heat loss. Both are vital for optimising building performance and occupant comfort. But Passive Purple External is no one trick pony and can go in the inside for retrofit projects such as solid wall builds because they need to breathe that little bit more
Why are our products referred to The intelligent membrane?
Passive Purple Internal and Passive Purple External are considered intelligent membranes because of the below points
Responsive Protection
By this it is meant that the membrane response to its natural environment, actively reacting to humidity and temperature change.
Enhanced Efficiency
It improves efficiency rating of buildings by reducing air leakage and providing flexibility so that the building can breathe.
Adaptive Performance
The membrane adapts to the change in weather conditions, providing extra waterproofing, providing protection against external moisture.
Efficient Installation
Due to intelligent membranes being paint based, they are easy and efficient to install using spray, roller and brush. Unlike traditional methods, you can easily get into gaps and hard to reach areas, ensuring an all over finish along the wall.
We are proud of the intelligent membrane products we manufacture and sell. The purple colour is recognised as an Intelligent Membrane product and represents eco-friendly advances in the building and construction industry.
