Overview
In high-performance construction, every layer in the building envelope plays a vital role. For this luxury residential project, a combination of Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF) and traditional blockwork walls presented a unique challenge: achieving maximum adhesion a
nd airtightness for the Passive Purple airtight membrane.
To ensure a flawless finish and long-term performance, Supergrip was applied as a primer to the ICF surfaces before the Passive Purple installation. Roll-applied for efficiency and consistency, Supergrip created an ideal surface for the airtight coating to bond to, guaranteeing exceptional durability and airtight integrity.
Background
This high-end property was designed to meet the highest standards of energy efficiency, thermal performance, and airtightness. The building’s structure incorporated ICF for superior insulation alongside blockwork walls for strength and stability.
However, the smooth finish of ICF can be challenging for direct membrane adhesion. Without proper preparation, there’s a risk of reduced bond strength, compromising the long-term performance of the airtightness system. That’s where Supergrip proved invaluable.
Solution
Step 1: Surface Preparation
Before application, the ICF walls were cleaned and inspected to remove any dust or debris that could interfere with adhesion.
Step 2: Application of Supergrip
Using rollers, Supergrip was evenly applied across all ICF surfaces. Its advanced formulation provided a textured, high-grip base layer that ensured the Passive Purple membrane would adhere strongly and consistently across the entire surface.
Step 3: Passive Purple Airtight Membrane
Once the primer had cured, Passive Purple was applied directly over both the primed ICF and the blockwork walls, creating a continuous, seamless airtight barrier. This combined system ensured both adhesion and airtightness were maximised.
Results
-
Exceptional Adhesion: Supergrip provided a secure, long-lasting bond between the Passive Purple membrane and ICF surfaces.
-
Seamless Airtight Barrier: The combination of primed ICF
-
and blockwork walls ensured no weak points in the building envelope.
-
High-End Performance: This project achieved airtightness results well within Passivhaus-level performance targets.
-
Durability: The primer and membrane system will maintain its performance for the building’s lifetime, even under environmental stress.
Client Feedback
“I was impressed by the attention to detail from start to finish. The primer step with Supergrip gave me peace of mind that the airtightness membrane would perform for decades to come. This is the level of quality every high-end build should have.”
