Radon is the cause of over 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year, making a quality radon barrier essential for any modern building.

A radon barrier acts as a protective, flexible membrane that blocks radon so that it cannot enter a building. Simply put, radon produces radioactive dust in the air. When breathed in, radon traps dust in our airways and damages our lungs. This dust can lead to cancer and does similar damage to the lungs as smoking does.

What Is Radon?
Radon is a radioactive gas that forms naturally when uranium, thorium, or radium break down in rocks, soil and groundwater. It has no colour, smell or taste. People can be exposed to radon from breathing radon in air that comes through cracks and gaps in buildings and homes.
What Are The Effects Of Radon?
Radon produces radioactive dust. If we were to breathe this in, it can be trapped in our airways and will emit radiation to the inside of our lungs. The effects of this means that there is an increased risk of lung cancer. Do Concrete Floors Offer Greater Protection Against Radon Than Timber Floors?
Radon can enter a house through cracks and gaps in and around both concrete and timber floors so the answer to this question is undecided. Timber floors may seem more leaky, but they also have a ventilated void below to prevent timber rot, which can help to dilute radon.
Does Radon Cause Leukaemia?
The short answer is we are unsure. Radon exposure mainly causes an increased risk of lung cancer. However, there has been a suggestion of an increased risk of leukaemia associated with radon exposure in adults and children but the evidence is not conclusive.
Is Radon A Problem In Any Other Countries?
Yes. According to the World Health Organisation, residential radon exposure alone was estimated to have caused 84,000 deaths by lung cancer in 2019. In essence, all countries are affected by radon to a certain extent, but the problem is receiving greater attention across Europe, USA and Canada.
Is Radon A Problem In The UK?
Radon is present in all parts of the UK however, you’ll be pleased to know that even in the most populous parts of the UK, Radon levels are quite low. Radon levels above the average have been found in parts of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland but even in these areas, most homes have low levels. Some of the higher levels have been found predominantly in the South West of England according to GOV.UK.
