What is a vapour control layer?

A vapour control layer, also commonly referred to as a vapour control barrier, is an essential building component designed to protect your building from degradation by preventing the passage and condensation of water vapour within the structure of your building.
What does a vapour membrane do?

The main purpose of a vapour membrane is to prevent water vapour from reaching the walls, ceiling, attic or roof of your building where it can condense and damage the structure of your building by causing materials to rot.
What is the difference between a vapour control barrier and a breathable membrane?

A vapour control barrier is applied on the inner side of a building’s insulation to reduce the vapour transfer within the building. A breathable membrane, on the other hand, is installed on the outer side, allowing vapour to escape while simultaneously preventing water from entering.
Should I put a vapour control barrier on my ceiling?

Having a vapour control barrier installed with your ceiling insulation is strongly recommended. Due to the temperature difference one of the common places where moisture and dew forms is the ceiling. Untreated moisture and vapour can cause mould on your ceiling which can be not only a health hazard, but is also dangerous for the structural integrity of your building.
Is a vapour control barrier the same as damp proof membrane?

A damp proof membrane protects walls and floors from moisture and damp rising up into the building, while a vapour control layer prevents moisture from inside the building creeping the walls and sitting in the cavities within the insulation.
Why Not Use A Paper Membrane?

The answer is you can – but paper membranes are susceptible to rips and tears leaving your building open to condensation and degradation. Why take the risk when you can easily apply a far tougher and more reliable vapour control layer?
What happens if I don’t have a vapour control layer?

If you don’t have a vapour control layer, you are putting your building at risk of long-term damage. Eventually, water will infiltrate every nook and cranny of your structure and you’ll end up having to splash out (excuse the pun) to rectify the problem.
Is a liquid vapour control layer bad for the environment?

Nope. We are committed to making environmentally friendly products that improve building practices and our vapour control membranes are no exception. Our membranes are water based and free form nasty chemicals. They also improve the lifecycle of a building therefore saving on materials, waste and labour (including the carbon footprint which is a by-product of that labour) in the future.
